The Jennings Matchbox Series

First off: Thanks for a really cool and
informative site!
I just started browsing around for tiny pocket scales,
i was concidering either of the AXE's or maybe the ProScale CC Series, in
particular ProScale CC-150 with a 0.05 resolution.

Then
i came accross something that looks pretty cool.
The Jennings MatchBox
scales.
These are the smallest scales i've found so far, and they look really
nice.
The 50g scale has a resolution of 0.01g, and with the price $39.90
this seems like a bargain.

Any
chance we will see a review of the Matchbox series?
I'm wondering if this
scale is as good as it looks, or if it's too small to use with e.g a seperate
tray, or too innaccurate to be used for anything good.

Any idea when the Matchbox Series comparo will be released? Also, do you guys
have the Jennings CD scale? Apologies to the OP, I'm not trying to hijack the

We have a bunch of various
We have a bunch of various Compact Disc inpsired scales here on the bench as
well as some matchbox scales. We've already done some of the tests but now
'someone' has to put it all onto paper and finish it up. I think the article
will be posted in early August when Jeff gets back in town.

We have the matchbox scale here, four of them actually were sent to us including
both the Jennings model and the American Weigh model. The Jennings one is really
nice, it has that display like the AXE2 with the weighmeter that wraps around
the oval LCD. The tray on all of these scales is quite small but you can use the
upside down cover as a bowl/expansion platform.
They're really quite fun,
and the Jennings one pulls my heartstrings because of that LCD and the nice
rubber keys (I love rubber keys, all scale keys really should be
rubber).
If you buy one please let me know what you think of it. My
personal favorite is this Brown Sugar one, it's just so darn cool.
We'll
do a comparison article on these scales shortly. Just have to go through the
steps.

Seeing that your first
impressions seems good i think I'll go for either the 50 or 200g scale.
The
200 one would probobly save me an my friends some time during the regular
sharing sessions, as opposed to the 50g one, heh.
I've never owned a
digital scale before, and with limited funds I'd like to be positive that I'll
be 100% pleased.
I hate finding stupid flaws on things i buy. It only means
that my research was poor.
So i think I'll wait for your review before I buy
anything, I also need to spend some time figuring out how to get it to Norway
for the least amount of money.
What do you mean by regular
What do you mean by regular sharing sessions? Food or sugars or what? Norway is
so beautiful, I visited there when I was in the Air Force and didn't want to
leave. Then again - it was the summer! The only flaw I found on all of these
matchbox scales was a slight tendency to drift after about 15-20 seconds. What I
mean is if we left a 200g weight on the 200g matchbox scale, first it would show
200.00 and then after about 15-20 seconds it would go to 200.05. That's pretty
much normal for all lower cost scales and actually it's kind of normal for all
scales unless you spend the money to get a true professional model. For all
scales it's best to remove the item from the tray immediately after getting a
stable reading. That does preserve the integrity and lifespan of the load cell
since it's basically a piece of high grade aluminum bending under pressure. The
longer it's bending, the quicker it will wear out (it will remain bent at some
point).
But this is probably more then you wanted to know about SPLC
(Single Point Load Cells). Anyway enjoy the summer and adjø, farvel .

Unfortunatly i cant say the same about the taxes.
I was
calculating how much i would end up to pay if i import from
saveonascales:
Scale: $40
Shipping $40
Taxes: $19 (24% of both
scale and shipping)
Toll fee: $25
Total: $124
We have to pay
taxes and toll fees on all products that
costs more than $34 in todays
value.
On both the product and the shipping!
So if the price for the
scale was e.g $33 instead then i would end up with a total sum of $40 + $33,
which is $73
After reading abit on saveonscales.com it seems like they're
not willing to alter the reported price to below $34, or to mark it as a gift.
Just shows they are serious i guess.
I think i'll wait for price reduce,
or maybe i'll just buy the AXE.
Is the AXE's load cell protected when it's
folded together btw, concidering they sell it with an extra case?
The
Matchbox case on the other hand is a part of the design, and looks protective
without incrasing the size very much.

questions yes the AXE is protectively closed when it's closed. All pressure is
removed from the load cell just like the Micro Tech and Jennings Mini do. There
'has' to be people that sell the Matchbox scales in Europe to save you these
costs I'd think?
I searched online and found the American Weigh ones on
Ebay.co.uk for very cheap prices. I know it's not the one you want but it's
better then nothing!

I found the American
Weigh matchbox scale on ebay for 16.99, with a battery included.
It was sold
by an ebay store called Zurbs which is located in Canada.

I
ordered the 300 x 0.1 scale, and it arrived in my mailbox in Norway 6 days
later.
It was properly packed in a small cardboard box that fitted my mailbox
without any problems.
It was nice to not have to go to the post office to
pick it up!
Maybe i even saved some toll or expedition fees becuase of this?
I don't know.
About the scale:
It's very small!
The outer matchbox
cover is made of cardboard and will proboably wear out if the scale is used
alot.
I don't use it, as it's just an extra cover to remove every
time.
The "inner" plastic cover seems to be protective, and it fits
nicely as an expansion tray.
I accidently pushed the plastic cover in between
the the scale and the weighing platform a couple of times. I don't know how
damaging this is, or how often it will happen in the future.
A friend of
mine did the exact same thing the first time he tried to slide the lid back
on.
i'm not really sure about the accuracy, becuase i don't have a 300g
weight to calibrate it.
I weighed a norwegian coin that's supposed to
weigh 9.9g, and the scale shows 10.0 or 10.1 every time.
(This happened
before my mishap with the plastic cocovver, too, btw)
Maybe a calibration
will fix this.
Unfortunatly no one on ebay sells 300g calibration weights. I
probably have to buy a 100g and a 200g one, and use both to calibrate.
I
was trying to verify my numbers just now, and realized the batteries was empty
already.
Seems like it doesn't have an auto-off function then....
This is
a flaw. Now i have to buy a new battery just because i forgot to turn it off (i
think).
All in all:
It is small!
It is cheap!
Matchbox cover is
useless!
I might have to calibrate it! (i don't know how much extra weight
dirt on a coin adds to the total, but 0.1 or 0.2 seems abit too much)
It
doesn't have auto-off! The batteries are dead already.

I am really sorry that I suggested you purchase that off-branded scale
I didn't realize that it was going to be that much junkier then the Jennings. I
kind of feel at fault which is why we are so adamant here about trying to help
people avoid those off-branded and generic scale junk products.
So you
got the scale cheap, great - but of course you're not happy with it and you're
going to lose a bunch of money on batteries and the scale probably won't last
very long as you have described. To make matters worse, you're describing the
typical inaccuracy that we hear so much about in those generic
scales.
Sorry about that, next time stay with the big brands. I hope you
don't blame us for what happened. I can email Tom Jennings to ask him to offer
you a discount on one of his scales if you want?

I knew i was
taking a risk buying the American Weigh scale on ebay, considering all i've read
about American Weigh here on scalemagazine.com. You clarely state that this is
not a brand to trust, so no blaming here
0.2g innaccuracy is just too much, especially when weighing only 9.9g. I
can't rally trust this scale, and it will be tiresome to explain its inaccuracy
to everyone i show the scale to.

Jennings seems to be a top brand and i'm sure
their matchbox scale is of alot higher quality.
